Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you start The Only?

When Erika was 8, she was one of two girls on her t-ball team. When she was 11, she was the only girl to run for elementary school president. At 14, she was the only girl on the freshman football team. At work, she’s been one of a few women on the team. Her own personal moments - trials and triumphs - and stories like hers are her inspiration.

What type of women are you interested in interviewing?

The Only project wants to speak to women who were The Only or one of The Only in all male environments. They want stories from academia, hollywood, coal mines, prisons, tech, teachers, etc. to explore what it means to be a self-identified woman in an all male environment.

What happens after I submit a nomination form?

The Only project will review each and every submission and get back to you within three business days. If your story is selected, we’ll have an interview with you. Once we have enough stories for to complete phase one, we’ll begin working on phase two for the art installation.

How will I know if my story will be part of the art project?

We’ll reach out to you to get your consent to participate. This may take a few months. Email theonlyproject18@gmail.com with any questions.

Any geographic restrictions on who The Only interviews?

No, we want to speak to women all around the world. However, interviews will be conducted in english. If you wish to have a translator or are have a hearing challenge, please note that in your nomination form.

Is The Only open to men as well?

Not at the moment, perhaps in the future. Please only apply if you identify as a woman.

Who will be conducting the interviews?

Erika Balbuena, founder of The Only Project.
